A MLS in a Small Hawaiian Hospital
Small hospitals are hard. Personally, most of the time I feel like a glorified phlebotomist rather than an actual MLS.
My day starts out doing QC on three instruments- there are a total of four POV instruments and for the one machine not QC'd daily, it is done monthly. In between QC runs some of the inpatients may need to be drawn for daily lab. Or you may have a slow day and you may only be doing QC.
After QC the outpatients start rolling in. And here I thought the lab life of a small Hospital would be a quiet one. Too bad. Days are busy between drawing outpatients and preparing their samples for couriers.
It was interesting to see a different perspective. To interact with patients and get to know other members of the hospital's staff. This is not something a MLS would normally get to experience at a larger hospital.
And my days off were of course my favorite. It is Hawaii after all!!!!
